Dear Mr. Groundhog...

Please don't eat my tomatoes!!

I know they're your favorite but we like them too.
That's why we planted them in those self-watering rolling planters with CAGES around them-
to keep out critters like YOU!

I know you're cute but it's not helping you any.

The Harvest

Last week we finally had some peppers (banana, jalapeno) and tomatoes ready from our deck garden!
Now I just have to find some recipes.
Actually the banana peppers and tomatoes were great with grilled chicken marinated in olive oil and balsamic vinegar!
Next year I want to grow bell peppers!

Light Fare for a Summer Night

Once in a while my Hubby and I like to spend a leisurely Saturday evening making a few dishes just for ourselves.
This weekend,I just felt compelled (almost obsessed) to make a classic three bean salad.
I had never made one before,so did a quick internet search and found this recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 ounce) can green beans
  • 1 pound wax beans
  • 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 onion, sliced into thin rings
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2/3 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed

Directions

  1. Mix together green beans, wax beans, kidney beans, onion, sugar, vinegar, vegetable oil, salt, pepper, and celery seed. Let set in refrigerator for at least 12 hours.

I had to cut it quite a bit since this version is for about 16 people!
Needless to say we have leftovers!

Three bean salad in vintage Pyrex!

We paired this with filets on the grill and small red potatoes that we boiled and then grilled and mixed in herbed olive oil. It was worth the work-as always!!

For dessert,we had a three berry shortcake that my husband made. He's my dessert expert!
Let me know if you want the recipe.

YUM!

Three beans and three berries!

Vintage Collections: Milk Glass

Some pieces in my master bath including a
newer vase from Martha Stewart!

Milk glass is an opaque or translucent,[citation needed] milky white or colored glass, blown or pressed into a wide variety of shapes. First made in Venice in the 16th century, colors include blue, pink, yellow, brown, black, and the white that led to its popular name.

This is the Wikipedia definition of milk glass. I was surprised to find out how long it has been around.
Have you ever seen brown milk glass? Interesting!!

I was also pleased to see that this month's Country Living had nice photos of some enviable milk glass collections,
including designer Sarah Richardson and her collection in her summer home's kitchen.
Oh, to have a summer home for new ideas and collections! Maybe some day!

Contemporary milk glass reached the height of it's popularity in the 1940's and 50's with companies such as Fenton and Westmoreland.
